Diagram Workshop Readings

5 – “Notations + Diagrams: Mapping the Intangible”- Stan Allen

Architect is a special subject that is the perfect solute of Art and Technology. There is a unique language to express this consummate subject. Diagrams and notations are the basic elements of this language. There are grazioso or crude tongues and there are clear or obscure sentences. It is an information age now that huge information chocked up our mind. Using the clear diagram and notation to express architect’s idea is as important as abstracting the legible words to communicate. Whenever and wherever, those simple diagram and notation would faithfully record the history.

The plenty of diagrams and notations assemble together to build the plan of the city. Here is the center of communication and is the concentration of information. The diagrams and notations built the diversiform character of cities.

The diagrams also have dissimilarity with the notations. Diagrams can cover the range of notations. However, all of notations belong to diagrams. Those two basic elements help the architects to have their own professional language, and this language is accurate and exclusive. On the other hand, it also has the monopolistic property.

The architect is similar as the music. Both of them have particular notes. From this opinion, diagrams and notations also have the rhythmic property.

Questions:

Does the diagram transcend the boundary of country as music? How about the cultural influence?
Are the diagrams perfect? Is there any shortcoming with the diagrams?

4 – “Landscapes of Change: Boccioni’s Stati d’animo as a General Theory of Models” – Sanford Kwinter

This article is recondite, imaginative and thoughtprovoking and covers the works of art, physical phenomenon and the theory of philosophy. A series of graphics, diagram and examples unveil the probability and instability of the catastrophe.

From the Cartesian grid system to non-linear system, a kind of movement or potential continually transforms to the whole earth system. This changes impact lots of the interior structure of issues. The evolving system is sensitive and the inside changes of this system deeply modify the event’s form and results.

Kwinter discusses the symbolic meaning of these works of art and the relationship of the nature and occultism which hidden in those works. Those metaphorical discussions expose the out of control in our ecosystem. The change of landscape is just one of those homeostatic phenomena. To keep the dynamic balance, it is the final form.

I cannot help thinking whatever the catastrophe happened or our planet self-improvement, the multiplicity of inducement may be out of human’s control, which brings us more poverty and wars. In our education system, the self-contradictory theories just like as the source of the catastrophe. Through all kinds of conflicts and accumulation, the whole systems of our world would be crumpled. The time may be the only one friend who can help us to avoid the catastrophe.

Questions:

Why does the catastrophe set always have the same form? Is it the inevitable result of history?
Is there anything else behind the Boccioni’s three-painting besides the natural force?

3 – “Violence of Architecture” – Bernard Tschumi

This article used a very strong word to compare to the relationship between occupancy with surrounding space. “Violence” can be explained as other word – “intervention”. This intervention is a result of the architecture development and it is also the change point or start point of architectural history. It replaced or created the spaces, buildings and events. This influence of intervention is enormous for the architecture field.

The author expatiated on the relationship of architecture space and the occupancy. They are dialectic antitheses. As the article mentioned, “Bodies carve all sorts of new and unexpected space, through fluid or erratic motions.” Space interacts with the occupancy and they cannot isolate with each other. And same time, they influenced each other. Space and occupancy are interdependence.

Architecture is a visual and tactual subject because the occupancy proves the architectural space not only by appearance but also by actions. The relationship of space and actions is independent and interactive. Actions rebuilt the spaces, and the spaces shaped the actions.

The interaction of occupancy, space and actions is a complex and dynamic balance in the architectural field. This triangular relationship is always concussive. The newer formation of architectural issue will display if any of the three agents broke this balance.

Questions:

Why did the occupancy destroy the purity of architectural order? Order can be dynamic and occupancy’s movement should add more rhythm in the architectural order.
What is the relationship between Asceticism and orgiastic with architectural theorists.
